This posts has two assignments:

1. LITERARY CRITIQUE

Now, read through this A Palace in the Old Village.
In this paper you are writing a critique of a fiction short story. Use MLA style to format your essay, and follow formal academic essay genre conventions. This means, do not use first person “I” – this is not a personal essay. Do not use contractions like “don’t.” Spell all the words out. Use concise sentence structure and a professional tone.
the paper should include quotes from the story as examples of literary devices you are analyzing, and have a clear opinion about the author you are critiquing. You are critiquing the author’s skills as a fiction writer. You want to argue the strengths and weaknesses of the story. Tell your reader whether the story is worth reading and if it is skillfully crafted or not. You may like some parts and not other parts so say so and back it up with examples. Your opinion and the devices you focus on should be clearly stated in your thesis statement.
PREWRITING
By this time, you should know the story intimately – the order of the scenes, the characters and dialogue, the main themes, their particular events and universal implications and the prominent literary devices used.

Let’s review:

Literary elementsare the constituents of literature that can be found in any written or oral story. Plot and character, for example, are necessary to story and are present in all stories from every culture and time period; therefore, they are essential elements to fiction stories. Unless there is something unusual about them, you don’t need to focus on them for analysis. Instead, focus on literary devices.

Literary devices are tools fiction writers use. All fiction writers use telling details – details that are placed carefully at a specific time on the story and illuminate more about the character(s) and theme(s). Fiction writers also use different literary devices for different stories. For instance, simile and irony are examples of literary devices. While many poems contain similes, not all do. While many stories have ironies, not all do. In the worksheet below, I ask you to look up and define several literary devices that are in the story we are reading.

A Translated Book
If you want to emphasize the work rather than the translator, cite as you would any other book. Add “translated by” and follow with the name(s) of the translator(s).

Foucault, Michel. Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason. Translated by Richard Howard, Vintage-Random House, 1988.
If you want to focus on the translation, list the translator as the author. In place of the author’s name, the translator’s name appears. His or her name is followed by the label, “, editor.” If the author of the book does not appear in the title of the book, include the name, with a “By” after the title of the book and before the publisher. Note that this type of citation is less common and should only be used for papers or writing in which translation plays a central role.

Howard, Richard, translator.Madness and Civilization: A History of Insanity in the Age of Reason. By Michel Foucault, Vintage-Random House, 1988. (OWL Purdue)
