Descriptive Language
The post has two asighnments
1. Cite at least two examples in Lorde’s essay that show her use of metaphor, analogy, or descriptive language. Then, explain how this use of metaphor, analogy or descriptive language is used to support her theme or themes. Be sure to identify the themes you recognize in her essay.
2. What did the term "poisonous weeds" mean during the Cultural Revolution in China? How did the dominant cultural expectations for citizen behavior during Mao’s reign impact Hua’s life? More specifically, why did he seek out forbidden texts and how did not knowing how a story began or ended, or not having access to books influence his outlook on reading, on writing, on the importance of literature?
3. What connects Lorde and Hua despite their differences in age, gender, class, and race? Be specific in giving your examples.
4. Why does Barry call school a "sanctuary"? If you don’t know the rich meaning of this word, look up its historical origins. What motivates Barry to tell this story? In other words, what is her message or messages for readers? Think carefully about how Barry blends the telling of her story with narrative commentary and flash forward because your goal for the first essay is to use similar techniques.
