Modulus of elasticity
The post has two asighnments
1. What force must be applied to a steel bar 1 in. square and 2 ft. long to produce an elongation of 0.016 in? (The modulus of elasticity for steel is 29,000,000 psi)
2. What axial compressive load may be placed on a short timber post whose cross-sectional dimensions are 9.5 x 9.5 in. if the allowable if unit compressive stress is 1100 psi?
3. Determine the minimum cross-sectional area of steel bar required to support a tensile force of 50 kips is the allowable unit tensile stress is 20 ksi.
4. Determine the moments of inertia Ix of the area shown with respect to centroidal axes respectively parallel and perpendicular to side AB. (First find the centroid, then determine the moment of inertia about the x axis that passes through the centroid)
5. For the beam and loading shown, draw the shear and bending-moment diagrams, and determine the maximum absolute values of the shear and bending moment.
6. A simple beam with a span of 18 ft supports a uniformly distributed dead load of 240 lb/ft and uniformly distributed live load of 480 lb/ft. An 8 x 16 beam of Douglas fir-larch of No.1 grade is used. Is the beam safe with regard to bending and shear stress. (The allowable bending stress for this type of wood is 1200 psi and the allowable shear stress is 180 psi. The properties for this cross sectional area Sx=300.3 inches cubed and Ix=2327 inches to the fourth).
7. A simple beam with a span of 22 ft supports a uniformly distributed load of 200 lb/ft and uniformly distributed live load of 600 lb/ft. Douglas fir-larch of No. 1 grade is used. Design the beam for bending and check the shear stress and deflection. (The allowable bending stress for this type of wood is 1200 psi and the allowable shear stress is 180 psi. The properties for this cross sectional area Sx=300.3 inches cubed and Ix=2327 inches to the fourth. The modulus of elasticity is 1,800,000 psi)
8. Select the lightest W shape steel beam for a 15-ft simple span carrying a uniform load of 3 kip/ft. Knowing the allowable bending stress is 24 ksi and the allowable shear stress is 14.5 ksi slect between the following W-shapes:
a. W14 x 34 (S=48.6, I=340, depth=13.98, tw=0.285)
b. W12 x 35 (S=45.6, I=285, depth=12.50, tw=0.300)
c. W10 x 45 (S=49.1, I=248, depth=10.10, tw=0.350)

In 750-1,000 words, address the following:
1. Examine how attitude is formed.
2. Discuss how personal implicit biases can form understandings at a local, national or global level.
3. Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the IAT as a research tool.
4. Reflect on your personal results from the IAT.
