2: African American literature
Order Description
Among the personal discoveries that Frederick Douglass wrote about in Narrative, his words about the importance of reason to freedom stand out: “I have found that, to make a contented slave, it is necessary to make a thoughtless one. It is necessary to darken his moral and mental vision, and, as far as possible, to annihilate the power of reason. He must be able to detect no inconsistencies in slavery; he must be made to feel that slavery is right.”
Select one pivotal event each from Turner’s Confession, Douglass’s Narrative, and Jacob’s Incidents, and discuss how each is depicted as a reasonable recourse in the struggle for liberty.
The paper should be about 1,500 words long, typed double-spaced, saved in Word, or Pages, or Adobe PDF, and submitted on Carmen by midnight on Friday, April 1, 2016. A good part of the evaluation of the paper will be about writing. You are encouraged, therefore, to give considerable thought and time to the mechanical elements of your paper: word choice, spelling, grammar, sentence coherence, conciseness of expression, paragraphing, a discernible order of presentation.
