The essence of this paper regards biological, psychological and sociological knowledge, theories and concepts and how this can
be applied to describe a patient life after ischemic stroke. Throughout this essay, the critical psycho-social categories. such as
body image and social isolation/depression will be analysed to illustrate the patient transition to chronic illness. The paper begins
by introducing the patient and defining what his needs are both physical and psychosocial. The discussion will then continue
identifying the principles of psycho-social patient care and their application to interaction with patients. relatives and colleagues.
Another key point indicated throughout the essay is the theoretical basis for psychosocial nursing practice and person-centred

Mr Ryan Johnson is a 66-year-old man who recently experienced an ischemic stroke. As a consequence of his acute stroke he
did not develop swallowing or speech problems, but because of his right-sided stroke, his left part of the body was paralysed.
Thus, his ability to walk was impaired, and he was using a walking aid. Ryan was living with his wife, who was his caregiver. and
their dog in a family house, and has been visited by district nurse once a week. They have two sons and a daughter who live
apart. Due to Ryan’s slow mobility, he increased his body weight significantly.
