Task
You being asked to describe and critically analyse the role of a transnational tourism organisation (in this case the World Travel and Tourism Council) and critically evaluate the degree to which it has achieved its stated aims and objectives.
You will be expected to discuss the aims and objectives of your chosen association and the scope, limitations and structure of its membership and its history. Some associations are open to a wide scope of members. For example PATA has members from government and private business and small and large travel firms. Full membership for the UNWTO is limited to government tourism Ministries although associate membership is open to a diversity of travel industry businesses and associations as well as educational institutions.
You will be expected to discuss the core tourism industry activities your association engages in and its key policy agenda. To what extent does it cooperate with or compete with other transnational tourism associations? What have been the association’s key initiatives in recent years and to what extent have they contributed to the global tourism industry or the specific sector they represent?
Using sources available in the industry or academic literature, and if possible primary contacts, discuss the association’s key achievements and shortcomings over the past ten years . In your analysis it would be valuable to determine whether the association has establish a distinct identity or whether it is duplicating the aims and activities of other associations.
Criteria
1. Ability to critically analyse and apply theoretical concepts underpinning industry and social perspectives on tourism management practice 20%.

4. Provide evidence that you Identify the key factors which influence the global and transnational business environment of the tourism industry and understand their significance 10%
5. Relate your topic to a systems approach to tourism. 10%
6. Essay written in a clear and logical fashion 10%
7. Evidence of extensive sourcing of relevant literature, primary and secondary sources. 10%
