FORMAL ASSIGNMENT # 3
ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY
The purpose of the Annotated Bibliography is to continue and further the development of a thesis for your upcoming research paper. In the research paper, I will be asking you to analyze and implement scholarly and non-scholarly articles on a topic of your choosing. Based on this research, you will add your own coherent argument to the larger conversation surrounding this topic. In other words, you will be integrating your reading, thinking and writing with information compiled by other writers. You will be using the information you collect in this assignment to write your research paper. You can think of an Annotated Bibliography as an extended “Works Cited” that you write before your paper. Basically, you are giving an overview of the books, articles and information that surrounds your topic to help you prepare for the research paper.
The Annotated Bibliography needs to contain 12 separate sources, 8 of these being “scholarly.” As discussed
Requirements / Guidelines: Must Read
in class, a scholarly source is one commonly found through the University of Tennessee Chattanooga library website in a peer-reviewed academic journal. Each source listed on the bibliography must consist of two things:
1. A correctly formatted MLA citation.
2. One paragraph that summarizes the main ideas/conclusions of the source, analyzes its argument, and contemplates how it could be used in the upcoming research paper.
The paragraph should state the source’s thesis and main supporting details in your own words. It should show analysis, that is, whether or not you think the author makes a convincing argument. Finally, it needs to anticipate the ways you could use this source in the paper while being as specific as possible. This is not a contract – you do not HAVE to do what you propose in this paragraph, but you need to be thinking ahead about the research paper while finishing this assignment.
Each paragraph needs to be written in clear, precise prose and complete sentences. Do NOT merely quote a passage from the source as your “summary.” The bibliography should be in Times New Roman 12 point font. This assignment can be single-spaced.
2: Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Order Description
If the South is hell, the North is purgatory. The Invisible Man’s crazy day at Liberty Paints is in many ways the symbolic center of the novel.
Interpret:
1) His meeting with Kimbro and the lesson on paint mixing, 2) his conversation and altercation with Brockway and 3) the forgotten-name lobotomy scene. Explain the larger importance of 1, 2 and 3. Focus on the Invisible Man’s quest for identity and/or the ways 2 and 3 reflect the diversity and difficulty of life in America.
3: Alzheimer’s Pathophysiology
Order Description
Prompt:
Pathophysiology: Next, you will write a MAX two page report on the physiological, cellular or biochemical effects of your disease. What problems does your disease cause? How are these problems manifested in the symptoms? Remember this is a physiology class, not a pre-medical course or psychology one. Keep the clinical/emotional/emo drama stuff out of this part of your series. You need at least FIVE REPUTABLE SCIENTIFIC references for this paper.
