? Presentation –Your essay needs to be typed in 12-point font with 1.5 spacing. The assessment should be in essay format, with a clear introduction, body and conclusion. For some helpful guides to writing in essay style, please see this link https://student.csu.edu.au/study/skills/guidesandtips/writing-at-uni
In-text referencing should follow APA 6th edition. A cover page should include student name and number, date, subject, assessment title and word count. Please save and submit to EASTS in a WORD Document. PDF files are very difficult to manage.
? Reference List – Ensure you have a reference list at the end of your assignment and this IS NOT included in your word count. In-text referencing IS included in your word count. At this stage I would not expect to see anyone reference the modules but the primary sources of the information. This is a 4th year subject and hence ensure you are referencing all materials mentioned in your work. It is expected that you would seek out and include additional references that are not included in the modules. Ensure you have correctly referenced in text as well. If you are unsure how to do this make sure you download a copy of the APA referencing guide. This is a very helpful tool, which is designed to assist you if used. CSU referencing information can be accessed here https://student.csu.edu.au/study/skills/guidesandtips/referencing
? Proofreading: Your use of English and correct referencing is awarded marks in the assignment. I cannot stress enough the need to re-read your work before submitting it through EASTS. Have someone else look over it as well if need be. It is an important skill to learn at this level to read what you have actually written not what you think you have written. Another person can tell you if the intent is clearly written and conveyed far better than you can yourself. Note that according to the
marking rubric, assessments which include multiple grammatical errors will fail the academic writing criteria.
? Grammar: When reading your work, check your grammar as well. Check your sentence structure and ensure that your spelling is correct. Remember we don’t use ‘z’ but rather the letter ‘s’ in many of our words unlike some other countries. Don’t always rely on spell check to fix up your errors. This can lead to silly mistakes that will be penalised. PLEASE make sure you are not including “run-on sentences”, as this seems to be a common issue. Here is a guide for avoiding run on sentences https://student.csu.edu.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/832478/Avoiding-Run-on-Sentences.pdf
Other guides for grammar can be found here https://student.csu.edu.au/study/skills/guidesandtips/english-language
? Rubric: The marking rubric is what we will use to mark your work. Ensure you read and deconstruct this to make sure that you fully understand each marking criteria and have covered everything outlined in this to gain maximum marks. You will find the rubric in the Subject Outline and this includes marks that will be allocated to each section. This will give you some guide to word count for the sections and what work is required to meet the satisfactory requirements in order to pass this subject.
? Writing style: Ensure that what you write has substance. It is a great skill to have to be able to synthesise your readings. This means that you bring together your readings and streamline your comments. You may also comment on how authors may differ in particular issues of leadership as well. Learn to write succinctly. This is something you will practice over time. A great study tip is to have a good draft completed, then check the word count and take away or add in what is appropriate for the particular assignment. It is important to get your thoughts down first and have a good draft to work on. This has worked well for others and hopefully it will work well for you too.
Did you know that CSU offers many free workshops and one-on-one consultations in relation to assessment preparation? I have included some information about these sessions and how to access them, at the end of this document.
? Direct quotes: Readings, particularly direct quotes must be incorporated into your essay in a meaningful way. Don’t just add in a quote for the sake of adding it. It must be there to support your discussion, add credence to your discussion or perhaps become an alternate view to your point. Direct quotes really only need to be used if there is no other way to write the information. We want to read your ideas and understandings, not an essay that just quotes the words of others!!!
? Paragraphs: these are a complete idea that you are presenting to the marker. When you change the topic you need a new paragraph. In saying this a paragraph is not a single sentence and it is not a full page. A double space between all paragraphs is a must.
? Word count: Your word count is 2000 words plus or minus 10%. Please do not go over or under this as you will lose marks. Ensure your essay has an introduction and conclusion as well.
? Your assignment has 3 parts. I have included it here again for you.
1. What is leadership? This discussion of leadership should be based on the module content and the associated readings.
2. What is your leadership philosophy? This should be a discussion of your own philosophy that should reflect theory and your emerging ideas of leadership and how they apply to you as an ECEC professional. You may like to draw upon a variety of theories, subject content and personal experiences to develop this philosophy.
3. How will you enact that philosophy in an early childhood setting? You should include clear links to how you might espouse that philosophy in an early childhood setting, as an early childhood professional.
? A leadership style is a leader’s style of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. There are many different leadership styles that can be exhibited by leaders and some of these include:
? Interactive Leadership
? Companion Leadership
? Positional Leader ship
? Transformational leaders
? Transactional leaders
? Visionary leadership
? Charismatic leadership
? Gender specific leadership
? Ethical leadership
? Authentic leadership
Leadership theory – Over time, a number of theories of leadership have been proposed, including:
? Great Man Theory
? Trait Theory
? Behavioural Theories
? The Managerial Grid
? Theory X and Theory Y
? Participative Leadership
? Lewin’s leadership styles
It is important that you spend time discussing some of the theories in relation to leadership. You may want to discuss what resonates with you as an ECEC educator and perhaps contrast this to other theories and leadership styles as well. It is an individual assignment and everyone will put forward their own take on how they view this topic. What I do suggest is that you take the time to ensure you have answered all three questions with as much detail as possible, don’t repeat yourself and ensure you use your word count to get as much information as you can to the marker to show your understanding of this topic.
? Remember that this assignment is about LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY and not your teaching practice/philosophy. Please don’t confuse the two as you will lose marks if you
2: Pirated Movies
Order Description
Develop a thesis statement on the topic of pirated movies (piracy hurts the economy by…, society can prevent movie piracy by…, etc.) and write an argumentative essay. Strive for at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource) ill help you craft your counter argument and refutation). Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. Beginning of a sample topic sentence: “The first way movie piracy hurts the economy is….” Then be sure to support that claim with researched data. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that summarizes the paragraph’s main ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement:
Ideally, a thesis would include the major assignment objectives for the essay, which in this case would be your claim/opinion, reasons why you have that opinion, and the counter-argument: “Movie piracy is unethical because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus).” Note that a thorough thesis statement will include the counterargument in addition to your own arguments.
See The Top Ten Tips for College-Level Writing (Presentation) for more thesis statement assistance.
Use at least three credible sources (the author should be considered an expert on the topic in which he or she writes; try Google Scholar to search), such as books, articles, and websites, to support your thesis. Include a mix of cited paraphrases, summaries, and quotes in your argumentative research paper. Use MLA format (Tip: You will find useful MLA resources within the course topics, particularly in Topic 9) to create proper parenthetical citations as well as a Works Cited page at the end of your essay. For additional Works Cited assistance visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/08/ and use the left navigation menu to locate the type of reference you need.
Option #2: Your Position on Electronic Policing
Develop a thesis statement on the topic of electronic policing and anti-plagiarism software and write an argumentative essay. Your chosen topic needs to be specific and might address a question like the ones you see in these examples:
Should student writers be subject to having their work checked by anti-plagiarism software? Why or why not?
Is anti-plagiarism software an effective deterrent to stealing published work? Why or why not?
You may choose another topic regarding electronic policing as well; just be sure that your main thesis addresses the topic of electronic policing.
Strive for at least three strong arguments in addition to a counterargument and refutation (this resource) will help you craft your counter argument and refutation). Using argumentative topic sentences that include your opinion for each section can help ensure the majority of your essay is argumentative. For example, “First, students should be subject to having their work checked by anti-plagiarism software because….” Then be sure to support that claim with researched data. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that summarizes the paragraph’s main ideas.
Sample Thesis Statement:
Ideally, a thesis would include the major assignment objectives for the essay, which in this case would be your claim/opinion, reasons why you have that opinion, and the counter-argument: “Students’ work should be checked by anti-plagiarism software because (add argument 1), (add argument 2), and (add argument 3), even though (add counterargument focus).”

More Tips
Visit http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/588/01/ for more argumentative thesis statement assistance and to learn if your thesis is both arguable and narrowed.
A counter-argument section for this paper should explain what the opposition believes, and it is the opposite of the opinion you are arguing in your paper. For example, if you are arguing that anti-plagiarism software should not be used in college classes, then the counterargument would be that anti-plagiarism software should be used. Then in your refutation, try to prove the counterargument false, insignificant, or unimportant with researched information that is new to the essay (avoid recycling facts from a previous argument in the essay).
This resource will help you craft your counter argument and refutation.
The guidelines and requirements for this assignment are as follows:
