Democracy, Voting, and Aristotle In the purest sense, a democracy means the ability to vote and to have that vote count. The voice of the people is heard through their votes, but only if those votes matter. To elaborate, there are countries where you can vote but there is only one name on the ballot—which, as you can imagine, does not allow for the voice the people. Now that we understand the definition, let’s explore democracy’s attributes and pitfalls. For example, if democracy is such a great thing (as Western societies proclaim) why did Aristotle hate it so much? Any thoughts? The Role of a Constitution What role does a constitution play within a democracy? What is unique about the U.S. constitution? Are there any amendments that you would propose?
2:Advantage of a unitary system
The Division of Power One advantage of a unitary system is that there are clear lines of authority, but a central government is not always best equipped to deal with localized concerns. In contrast, a federal system allows the government closest to the problem to deal with it. However, sometimes there are coordination problems because local governments may lack resources to deal with problems. So which do you feel allows for more stability within the government? Which is more flexible? And after all is said and done, which one do you prefer? Separation of Powers In addition to federalism, the United States also believes in separating the powers between its branches of government, referred to as the U.S. system of checks and balances. Who can explain to the class how this system works? Additionally, what are the benefits and drawbacks of such a system? If you were starting a government from scratch, would you include it?
