The Division of Power One advantage of a unitary system is that there are clear lines of authority, but a central government is not always best equipped to deal with localized concerns. In contrast, a federal system allows the government closest to the problem to deal with it. However, sometimes there are coordination problems because local governments may lack resources to deal with problems. So which do you feel allows for more stability within the government? Which is more flexible? And after all is said and done, which one do you prefer? Separation of Powers In addition to federalism, the United States also believes in separating the powers between its branches of government, referred to as the U.S. system of checks and balances.
