Persuasive Editorials
One way that writing can impact the world is through newspaper editorials. Most newspapers have an Editorial or Op-Ed page, where writers (both local and national) explore current events that the average reader should know. These editorials are usually no more than two pages in length, double spaced, but appear single-spaced in print; given such a brief amount of time, writers must succinctly identify the issue and provide their argument in limited time. Other citizens and residents often write shorter letters to the editor which respond to newspaper stories or raise awareness of an issue that matters to the audience.
Given that this is an election year, where voters will decide the next President of the United States, I would like for you to write two separate, stand-alone editorials. Each of these editorials will endorse a different candidate for President. Given that there are only two viable candidates for office, one editorial will support the Republican nominee and one will support the Democratic nominee. The purpose of this assignment is twofold: first, it will enable you to research two candidates for President and (hopefully) vote for one of them. Secondly, you will learn to see at least two sides of the same issue. If you can argue for something you don’t personally believe in (or aren’t personally interested in, for that matter) then you will be able to argue just about anything. Each editorial should only be two pages in length, double spaced. Your goal in each editorial is to persuade a newspaper readership (your hometown, local, student paper, etc.) to vote for a particular candidate. You must also choose and present the most compelling reasons why your audience should vote for this person.
A note on documentation: newspaper editorials and letters to the editor do not adhere to MLA or APA documentation requirements. However, they do use evidence. When including evidence in your editorials, you should provide enough information (date, author, etc) in your text so that a reader could easily locate the source of your information. A works cited page or parenthetical citations is not used in this genre.
