The analytical summary should follow the following format: The first part (about 300 words) • Brief statement of the main thrust of the reading in two or three sentences (one paragraph). This is the author’s thesis position.
• Brief notes of the key points (conclusions, arguments, and key pieces of information (one paragraph). The second part (about 200 words)
• Briefly identify any problems, questions, or issues that you see arising from the reading and comment on them. (This is the analysis part.) In the first part you should report the author’s views (as accurately and succinctly as possible). In the second part I am looking for your views about the author’s views. (I am not interested in commentary about the style of the author’s writing or their research.)
Accurate and concise summary of the author’s argument The summary section of your response must be an accurate reflection of the content of the reading, including of the author’s ideas and views. Your summary must also be concise, that is brief and to the point. What is important here is that you have identified the main argument that the author is making and the main points within the reading that support what you believe is the author’s argument.
Using your own words demonstrates that you have genuinely processed the ideas you are using rather than simply collecting the words and ideas of other scholars. In other words, using your own words helps to make the work your own.
English expression, correct spelling and grammar your journal entries should be well written. The English expression should be clear, even elegant if you can manage it. Original thought and critical thinking You should strive to think things through for yourself and come up with original ideas if you can.
