Please review the following details of Oluyinka, who has approached you seeking your guidance on applying under the Federal Self-Employed category. Once you have reviewed her case, read the assignment instructions carefully.
Oluyinka’s Case:
Oluyinka was born in Abuja, Nigeria on November 27th, 1980.
She attended the University of Nigeria in Nsukka where she graduated with an undergraduate degree in English Literature in 2001. She continued her education in Canada at Concordia University where she secured a Masters of Arts in Translation in 2003. Her total number of years of study are 18 years. Following her studies, she returned to Nigeria to care for an ailing parent for 2 years.
In 2005, she secured a position as a translator for the United Nations Development Program in Nigeria where she was involved in translating written material as well as interpretation of the spoken word. She worked in this capacity for 5 years until 2010. In that year she began to slowly build up a small self employed business wherein she offered to translate educational English publications into several different dialects for use in rural schools. Conversely, she also worked with authors in rural areas translating their own writings into English for publication. She took several of these short stories produced by Nigerian authors, compiled them, translated them and then assisted in getting them published for worldwide consumption. Her work became quite well known and she won several humanitarian rewards for assisting in making the stories of Nigeria and the plight of many in her country known to the rest of the world. Oluyinka initially applied about 20 hours per week to her self employed activities (2010) and then expanded this to 30 hours per week (2011) to her most current work load which is taking 40 hours per week (2012-2015). Oluyinka has not provided any details as to what she has been doing since the end of 2015.
Oluyinka is interested in migrating to Canada now as she is newly married and has a young child. She intends to continue with her translation work, but she also wishes to work on writing her own story which she intends to publish. She has already secured the interest of the publishing company Harper Collins in respect to publishing her memoirs and experiences in Nigeria. She has also investigated means to provide interpretation/translation services on a self-employed contractual basis through Mosaic Translation Services and to a group of smaller Canadian publishers wishing to translate English text into French, which Oluyinka is also skilled at as she is also highly proficient in French.
