What gender differences are presented regarding the use, management, and participation in fisheries in our readings for this week?
The article by Harper et al. states that “fisheries research, management, and policy have traditionally focused on direct, formal, and paid fishing activities—that are often dominated by men, ignoring those that are indirect, informal, and/or unpaid—where women are concentrated. This has led to a situation where men’s and women’s contributions to fisheries are not equally valued or even recognized and has resulted in women being largely excluded from fisheries decision-making processes” (91). Explain this sentiment in detail and discuss the significance of this phenomena.
Discuss some potential policy changes or changes for balancing gender inequities in the fishery sector? What (if any) are some initiatives taken by the seafood industry or by the public to address gender imbalances? Reference the article by Calhoun et al. This will help prepare you for your upcoming Policy Implementation Analysis assignment that is due Week 6.
Include your working thesis statement in preparation for your final paper (and power point presentation). What natural resource thematic area do you plan to focus on and what do you want to write about?

• STEPS 2.Each of the replies is worth 5 points (10 pts total). Read through your classmates’ posts and choose 2 to respond to. Each reply will be scored as follows:
  • 5 pt: for replying to a classmates’ discussion prompt in a substantive way. (in other words: “Yes” or “I agree” is insufficient. Keep going! Why do you agree? What can you add?) This should take at least 5-6 full sentences or 100 words.
  • 5 pt: Your response should enhance your classmates’ analysis of the definitions and examples. Go further; address another aspect.
  • Points will be deducted if the replies are not on the Discussion Board by the deadline.
