Farewell My Concubine

Part 1

For The Personals, 29:12-30:26, and describe the sounds in each shot and note the time that each sound first occurs. Focus on the following aspects:

1. Does the sound in each shot fall into the following categories: music, dialogue, or sound effect?
2. Is the sound diagetic or nondiagetic? Is it synchronic, asynchronic, or nonsynchronic? (when the sound begins)
3. What is the quality of the sound itself? (Pitch, volume, etc)

Part 2

In the film Farewell My Concubine:

1. Use the following categories to analyze the film. Make sure your selection covers the entirety of the film

Locations: What are the major locations that the film takes place?

Main characters

Secondary characters

Desires: What motivates the characters in the film?

Conflicts: What are the major conflicts between characters in the film? (Are there any)

For example: Does the film end in the same place as it began? Are there characters who serve the same function in the film?

You do not have to list every single character or every single location. The motivation behind this exercise is to ask you to think about what places, people, or plot points are significant. You will be evaluated on your ability to follow instructions and also your ability to isolate significant aspects throughout the film.
