Part I. Two Short Essays. Write short essays (two or three paragraphs each) on two of the following key terms. Tell why the person, place, or concept is important to global trends between 1500-1914. Explain how you understand the item in relation to what we are learning about the era. Include at least one picture for each essay and tell how the picture helps us understand the topic.

Part II. Longer Essay with Document. Write an essay of about five paragraphs on one of the following questions. Include at least two pictures with the essay and note how the pictures help us undertand the topic. Please make sure the information you share is different from what you wrote about in Part I. Please also include your insights on at least one primary source document.
Worlds Entangled. Explain some of the economic, political, and social impacts of global commerce in the era of 1600-1850. Give specific examples from three different parts of the world. Do you see commerce creating prosperty and stability, or do you see the contact creating upheaval?
Islamic Heartland. Describe the major Islamic societies of the era from the 1500s to 1800s. What did the Ottomans have in common with the Safavids and the Mughal Empire? What key differences do you see? Can you see how these societies helped shape the world we live in today?
Russia, China and Japan. What is going on with these three countries in the era from the mid-1600s to early 1900s? What do they have in common? Why would they have trouble getting along?
Africa. How do you see various parts of Africa developing from the 1500s-1800s. How do you see the continent influenced by outside forces? How do you see Africans developing their own institutions and economies? Mention events in at least three distinct areas of the continent.
Europe. Explain three major changes you see in Europe in the era from 1600-1914. In what ways do you see Europe influencing the rest of the world? In what ways do you see the rest of the world influencing Europe? Mention specific leaders or movements in your essay.
Splendor and Power! Explain some of the ways you see monarchs, or other powerful people, showing off their wealth and power in the era from the 1500s-1800s. Compare specific examples in at least three different societies.
Cultural Identity. What does it mean to be modern? Explore this question in relation to three different societies in the era from 1500s to the early 1900s.
Part III. Reflective Essay: Alternative Visions. In an essay of at least five pargraphs, discuss three politcal or cultural movements you see as especially important in chapters 14-18. How do these movements relate to major trends in the era? How does each movement fit in a cultural context as well as a global context? What insight can we gain from learning about these movements?
For this essay, please include material from at least two primary source documents. You may also include pictures if they could be especially helpful.
