In 5-6 pages, write a thesis-driven research paper that examines gender issues in any sector of the American workforce and advocate for solutions to these problems. Start broadly (i.e. academia, government, or business) and then narrow your focus (i.e. STEM, NASA, the movie industry) as you examine issues like the gender wage gap, leadership ambition gap, sexual harassment, sexism, work-life balance, masculinity/femininity stigmas, etc.
Structure:
I. Introduction
What is the general conversation that we’re having today about gender? State your general and focused topics. Preview the kinds of sources you’ll be using in the essay as you explicate the issue(s).Conclude with a problem-solution thesis statement.
II. Historical Overview + Summary and Analysis of the Current Problem(s)
What are the issues that men and/or women face in your selected area of employment? How long has this been going on? How are these conditions similar to or different from how they were in the past? Any notable watershed moments or controversies in the past or present?
III. Enter the Conversation: State and Explain Your Solution(s)
How can we solve these issues? Are there advocate groups or legislation (existing or proposed) that can help alleviate these issues? What can we do as employees or citizens to address these issues? What can/should people already in positions of power do to ameliorate these problems?
IV. Counterargument(s)
Anticipate objections to your proposals. Why and how would someone (1) state that you are mischaracterizing or misunderstanding the issues, (2) assert that you are making something out of nothing, or (3) disagree with your solutions to the problem? Objectively and fairly summarize these contrarian views before responding to them.
V. Conclusion
DO NOT begin with an unnecessary phrase such as “in conclusion,” “in summary,” or “in closing.” DO NOT restate your thesis verbatim. DO NOT recap or summarize your entire essay. DO NOT include new evidence or quotes that should be in the body of the paper. Instead, synthesize the information while echoing your main points using new language. Propose a course of action, a solution to an issue, or questions for further study. Point to the broader implications of the topic. Go beyond the confines of the paper to show a new direction for the conversation. Leave the reader satiated by what you have provided while also offering food for future thought.
Critically examine your sources for bias as you evaluate their credibility
Quote and paraphrase from a range of sources that have varying or even conflicting opinions
Cite at least one relevant statistic
Provide historical context in order to compare and contrast the conditions of this work environment in the past with the present
include at least one counterargument and respond to it
follow MLA conventions and include a Works Cited page
