Include the name of the author and the book title and the main theme.
Reveal relevant details about who the author is and where he/she stands in the genre or
field of inquiry. You could also link the title to the subject to show how the title explains the
subject matter.
Define the context of the book and/or your review – the historical, sociological, economic,
scientific or other circumstances that may have influenced or contributed to its publication.
Placing your review in a framework that makes sense to your audience alerts readers to
your “take” on the book.
Describe the thesis or central idea of the book. This will probably be stated in the
introduction or the conclusion.
Summary of content
This should be brief, as analysis takes priority. Pull out 3 – 6 key takeaways 1
Analysis and evaluation of the book
Consider the book’s strengths and weaknesses, addressing the following:
i – The tone and style of the writing
3 – The importance of the book in its field
The value of the book for its intended audience
The effectiveness of the author’s argument
The soundness of the author’s conclusions
The practicality of the author’s recommendations
Mention any particularly interesting or memorable points or passages, and support your ‘ j
opinions with references to the book, but use quotations sparingly.
In your evaluation, you might reflect on how the book relates to the course and the fields of
marketing and advertising.
Conclusion
Sum up or restate your thesis or make the final judgment regarding the book.
