(you do not need to look for external sources unless you are doing topics 6 or 7)

Choose one of the following 7 topics.  Make sure to denote at the top of the paper which topic you have chosen.  Make sure to follow guidelines listed below for formatting.  Finally, make sure to write on a different text from your first paper; i.e. if you wrote on Carver’s story, choose another text to write about, or conversely if you wrote on a Williams’ story, choose another text to write about for your term paper.

5. Choose one of the typical metaphors for illness mentioned is Sontag’s text and analyze how this metaphor is developed in at least two additional texts that we discussed in class or that you discovered on your own (do not write again about a text from your first paper).

Rules and guidelines:

• The essay must be typed and double-spaced, with app. 1-inch margins. The format should include name, class, date, and topic number.  A title is necessary, but not a title page.

• If you start early and email me your draft a couple of weeks before the deadline, I’ll try to guide your revision. If you want me to help you with the draft, you have to get it to me by the end of Week 10 (August 4)

• Your essay will need a thesis and direct evidence from the readings (i.e. paraphrase and quotation).

• Beware of plagiarism. The papers on Dropbox on Beachboard are run through the Turn-it-in Program so if you incorporate research, make sure to document sources.  If you plagiarize and are caught, it is an F for the assignment and for the class.

• Try to be inventive and imaginative; make the essay interesting for yourself, and it will most likely be more successful.
