Research Paper and Presentation
Essay Promp_t; In Just Mercy, Bryan Stevenson addresses a number of
social justice issues. Using the book as your inspiration, select one of them
to explore more deeply through your own research. Possible topics
include, but are not limited to capital punishment, mass incarceration, and
solitary confinement. Take a position on the issue and develop an
flgument about it. Locate evidence through your research to help you
support your argument. Write a 6-8 page argumentative essay on the
issue you have selected. Include a Works Cited page (that does not count
toward the page minimum.) Word-process the paper using MLA format.
Revision: Begin this assignment as early as possible to ensure there is
plenty of time to edit and revise before submitting your paper. As you edit
and revise, carefully consider comments you received from tutors, your
peers during the peer review workshop, and feedback from the instructor
on this and other papers throughout this semester.
Research: Once you select a topic and a tentative thesis, you will need to
locate a minimum of five sources (books, essays, and articles published in
academic journals, books, and periodicals. A pertinent documentary may
be allowable. Discuss with me first.) to incorporate and cite in your paper.
You may use the City College Library by going there in person or
accessing the article databases online. You may also conduct searches
online with Google Scholar and other similar search engines, but they are
less likely to yield adequate sources for this paper. Carefully evaluate
sources ensuring they are credible before using them for your paper. You
may also use as many of the relevant sources we explored in class, but you
must locate at least four on your own. The book, Just Mercy, may be
quoted and cited but does not count toward the five. Ensure that the
sources you select contribute to a cohesive argument. Integrate
information from your sources by mphrasing and quoting. Be sure to
introduce, explain, and cite all quotations and paraphrases in your own
words.
