Leisure in the News Presentation

The purpose of this assignment is to enhance student’s exposure to how leisure and recreation impact
contemporary culture in a variety of fields. Each student will find a controversial article and present how class
theory and concepts connect to their specific topic in a presentation format.
Students will create a 15-20 slide powerpoint (or google slide), presentation answering the following prompts.
Use APA 6th edition when applicable (such as for citations). Make sure that your presentation is grammatically
correct and free of typos and other errors. Make your presentation visually appealing as though you were
presenting this to a class.
If you want written feedback in addition to your numeric feedback, please write “I WANT FEEDBACK” in the
dropbox notes window when you upload your file.
You will find one recent article pertaining to one of the following topics:
Leisure and technology
Leisure’s geography
Leisure and culture
Leisure and self-Identity
Leisure and social justice
Leisure and economics
It must be an article published at some point during this semester. It needs to be a controversial article, one
that can be debated. It does not need to be a peer-reviewed academic journal, it can be pop-science found on
social media. You will create 15-20 slides that explain the following:
1. A summary of the article in your own words
2. Why you chose this article, what is interesting/important about it?
3. How this article connects to class material
4. What is the controversy? Explain at least 2 “sides” or viewpoints to the issue.
5. Is the article a high quality article with factual, trustworthy information? Think and present critically about the
source information.
6. What is your viewpoint/insight?
7. How does this impact our society?
8. How does this impact the field of recreation and leisure studies?
9. Provide at least 2 resources/links for people who are interested in this topic to continue learning about it.
You will be graded on how relevant your choice of article is to class topics, how in depth and thoughtful your
analysis is, the quality of your writing, the quality of the presentation, and connection you make to class
content.
