Documented Persuasive Essay Assignment
The purpose of the Documented Persuasive Essay is to gain proficiency in the principles of persuasive communication and to demonstrate the ability to do documented research. In order to exhibit this you will need to:
- Distinguish fact from assumption and opinion
- Avoid forms of fallacious reasoning and unsubstantiated personal bias
- Encourage reasoning and understanding in your argument over presumption and reaction
In addition to the above, you will need to:
- Clearly articulate a controversial topic in a well formatted thesis that is a clear assertion and is presented indirectly or directly (your choice must be appropriate for the topic you chose)
- Organize your argument utilizing the Alternating Method
- Appropriately present opposing viewpoints and effectively refute them
- Avoid 1st and 2nd person
- Critically read and cite sources that support your argument using MLA format within the text and for the Works Cited page.
- At least 3 sources must be cited. Sources must be derived from at least two of the following resources: printed sources, electronic data bases, non-print sources and interactive media
- Utilize solid logic while incorporating and balancing ethical and emotional appeals
- Create an effective conclusion that clearly states your position

- GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS and/or FOOD SCARCITY
Length requirement: The acceptable length for the Documented Persuasive Essay is 3-4 pages, using the margin and font requirements as stated in the syllabus. Papers that are less than 3 full pages will be returned and the late-work deductions, as explained in the syllabus, will be applied.
You must have at least 3 quoted sources. The checklist and Works Cited page should be included, but do not count towards the length requirement.
