C419 Tactics and Sustainment Exam (AY15-16) 1

This exam covers the Army’s doctrinal principles of unified land operations, decisive action, and mission command. You will use the concepts you learned in lessons C410 through C419 to answer the exam. This exam is worth 35% of the C400 grade. You may use the C400 online lessons and readings to help you answer the exam. You may use your notes and take as long as you need. However, ALL work must be your own. You may NOT discuss this exam with any other person except your DDE academic advisor or faculty member. You do not have to submit a CGSC Form 1009w writing evaluation for this exam. Primary doctrinal references for the exam include: • ADRP 1-02 Operational Terms and Military Symbols (2015) • ADRP 3-0 Unified Land Operations (2012) • ADRP 4-0 Sustainment (2012) • ADRP 5-0 The Operations Process (2012) • FM 3-09 Field Artillery Operations and Fire Support (2014) • FM 3-90-1 Offense and Defense (INCL C1 & C2) (2015) • FM 3-90-2 Reconnaissance, Security, and Tactical Enabling Tasks (2013) • FM 3-96 Brigade Combat Team (2015) • FM 6-0 Commander and Staff Organizations and Operations (INCL C1 & C2) (2016) These publications are available in the Blackboard Master Library. You also may access the doctrinal references via the Army Publishing Directorate at the following link: http://www.apd.army.mil/ . If you quote something from doctrine, the readings, or the lessons as part of your answer, you must give a citation in accordance with ST 22-2. You may use parenthetical citations, endnotes or footnotes; all citations must include page numbers. A bibliography is not required. Type and submit your answers on a Word document as you would for a standard essay. Single space your answers; double-space between paragraphs; write in complete sentences, not bullets. A sketch map is provided in a separate PowerPoint file, it allows you to move unit symbols to locations that depict your concept for the operation. However, there are some doctrinal symbols that you will have to draw in accordance with the exam’s requirements; see ADRP 1-02 on how to draw the symbols correctly. Submit your sketch as a PowerPoint file, however, you may also draw your sketch by hand, scan it, and submit as a PDF. CGSC does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism, or unauthorized collaboration. Therefore, you should review CGSC Bulletin #920, Academic Ethics Policy (February 2016) and the DDE Academic Ethics brief posted on the course information page. Violation of academic ethics will result in an investigation and possible removal from the course. Examination (Testing) Materials – Sensitive in Nature “Do Not Copy, Print, Transmit, or Save Unless Specifically Authorized” C419 Tactics and Sustainment Exam (AY15-16) 3 Please read the following scenario:

THE SITUATION—30 minutes ago You are the commander of the 1/1 Armor Brigade Combat Team (ABCT), which is the lead element of the main body in the 5th Infantry Division’s (ID) attack to seize OBJ TANGO, a city 80 kilometers west of MIDLAND. 1/1 ABCT was conducting the division’s decisive operation to seize OBJ TANGO NLT 040900 May 2020 (H+12) in order to protect the II Corps’ main effort. The division’s advance guard, 1/2 ABCT (attached to 5 ID), passed MIDLAND without incident approximately two hours ago. In the period between 1/2 ABCT’s passing of MIDLAND and 1/1 ABCT’s approach, enemy forces emplaced several obstacles (overturned vehicles and building materials) on ROUTE BLUE south of the town to disrupt friendly force movement. As the 1-12 Cavalry Squadron, the lead element of your ABCT, approached MIDLAND they received consistent and accurate mortar and rocket (RPG) fire from the town. THE CURRENT SITUATION—040100 May 2020 (H+4) The remainder of the division’s main body is approximately six hours behind your trail unit and will use ROUTE BLUE as well. The 1-12 Cavalry Squadron commander reports that enemy elements near ROUTE BLUE withdrew into MIDLAND after his lead cavalry troop returned fire. He also states that while the squadron can by-pass the obstacles, the obstruction will disrupt movement for the rest of the division. As your ABCT S3 reports enemy contact to the 5th ID main command post, your ABCT S2 relays a report from the 5th ID G2 that an enemy maneuver brigade with two maneuver battalions (one tank battalion with about 33 T90 main battle tanks and one mechanized infantry battalion with about 38 BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles) and one field artillery battalion (18 2S3 self-propelled 152mm howitzers) is moving south vicinity of ALPHAVILLE. The 5th ID G2 assessed that this enemy brigade will attack the 5th ID’s main body as it passes through the area along ROUTE BLUE. Additionally, the G2 estimated that the enemy in MIDLAND is a company-sized irregular force of 100-120 personnel equipped with light weapons (AK47 and RPK) and some RPG7V and 82mm mortars. The G2 expects that this irregular force will continue to disrupt movement along ROUTE BLUE in support of the enemy maneuver brigade’s attack against the 5th ID’s main body. Your ABCT S2 predicts that the enemy brigade will be within indirect fire range of ROUTE BLUE in six hours and direct fire range in seven hours. The 5th ID commanding general considers these developments a significant threat to the division’s mission and the corps’ future line of communication. He contacts you with the following verbal directive: “I am concerned about the division’s northern flank and the situation around MIDLAND.

Your new mission is defeat the enemy on our northern flank to protect the division’s main body. It is important that the division continues the mission to seize OBJ TANGO. I’m not sure how long this operation will take, but I want you to rejoin 5th ID as soon as you complete this mission. 1/2 ABCT will continue as the division’s advance guard and the 1/5 ABCT (approximately 30km behind your unit) will assume your previous mission to conduct the division’s decisive operation.” – 4- Examination (Testing) Materials – Sensitive in Nature “Do Not Copy, Print, Transmit, or Save Unless Specifically Authorized”

C419 Tactics and Sustainment Exam (AY15-16) The 1/1 ABCT’s organization is the following: ***** Note: Citing doctrine is NOT enough to get credit for this assignment. You must examine the situation and then apply the principles of doctrine. After you analyze the situation, sketch your concept to visualize the ABCT’s operational framework for accomplishing the mission, this will enable you to write a meaningful response for each exam requirement. ***** The C419 Tactics & Sustainment Exam Sketch for this situation is available to you in a separate PowerPoint document. Use the C419 Tactics & Sustainment Exam Sketch to depict your concept for the 1/1 ABCT’s operation in accordance with the requirements below.
