GHOST DOG: THE WAY OF THE SAMURAI (dir. Jim Jarmusch, U.S. 1999)
If you choose to write about Ghost Dog, your essay should include an introductory paragraph and thesis statement that identifies the film as a postmodern work of art and fiction. Then you would proceed with an analysis of the film, arguing for how the film conforms to the postmodern approach or mode of fiction filmmaking.
2. Big Data Essay Research Design
Writing Guidelines Spring 2018
Your big data essay is meant to give you a sense of the implications of big data. You should use
the Moro et al (2016) paper found in Blackboard in conjunction with your own analyses for this
essay.
You should generally cover the following 3 components:
Review of the Moro background paper:
• What is the data and where did it come from?
• What do Moro and colleagues do with this data (what are their procedures)?
• What do Moro and colleagues conclude from the data?
Review your RQs and analyses:
• What are your two research questions?
• How did you analyze those questions?
• What were the outcomes?
Compare and Contrast Your Findings to those of Moro et al (2016)
• Discuss similarities and differences in analysis strategies with those of Moro
• Discuss similarities and differences in your findings and those of Moro
• If your findings are different, what conclusions would you have come to as opposed
to Moro’s approach?
Implications of the Big Data Approach
• Based on your analyses and comparisons, what does this tell you about the pros and
cons of the big data approach?
• What might be some pros and cons of applying the big data approach to
psychological studies and methods?
Overall, you should expect that this should be about 3-4 pages in length – but mostly it should be
long enough to cover the covered points above.
