Use information from the assigned readings, lectures, and class discussions toanswerthe following two questions (you must respond to both):

1. In this class, we have discussed various population movements, such as the Bantu and Polynesian expansions. Discuss any other two population movements in world history and give specific examples showing how they changed cultures or environments in the places where they occurred.

2. Define modernity. Be specific. Identify three of the key elements that led to the evolution of modernity in Europe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the French Revolution.

See the big picture, but find the right balance of necessary detail and specifics. Try to tell a narrative story. This requires judgement; there remain many possible focal points and informed responses to these questions.Write 2-3 pp. (pp. = pages) for each essay. Less than two pages will notsuffice, and more than three will represent too much. Use Times New Roman or another standard font of your choice, at 12 points, and double spacing. Do not waste time on footnotes, works cited, and title pages with your signature other an oath, etc. This is not a research paper. Do not go outside of our readings, lectures, and discussions when responding. Just tell me what you know in your words. Get to the point and stay on point. Speak plainly and demonstrate, in writing, what you have learned this semester. Do not forget to show how your learning has advanced our learning outcomes, above.

Grading (0 to 15 points for each essay)

0          No paper or essay submitted. Or student violated academic integrity while writing and/or submitting paper or essay. I will reject any exam that you attempt to submit even though you yourself did not write it. You must submit your own work in this course and indeed in all courses. This means that you plan it, you write it, and you edit it without professional “help.” No exceptions. I will report flagrant cases to the Honor Council.

7.5       Exam submitted, but fails to identify and address an issue, and fails to demonstrate minimal comprehension or understanding of the subject to pass at the university level.

9          Exam submitted, begins to identify and address an issue, but does not represent satisfactory university-level work. Demonstrates only minimal comprehension or understanding of the subject. Will tend to lack an explicit and purposeful introduction, strong topic sentences and transitions, and a clear conclusion.

10.5     Exam submitted, satisfactorily identifies and addresses an issue, demonstrates satisfactory comprehension or understanding of the subject, but fails to tell a clear narrative story and generally lacks purpose and structure. May ramble on certain off-topic points in run-on paragraphs, and lacks editing for clarity. Still tends to lack an explicit introduction, strong topic sentences and transitions, and a clear conclusion.

12        Exam submitted, satisfactorily identifies and addresses an issue, demonstrates good to excellent comprehension or understanding of the subject, tells a clear narrative story, has an identifiable structure, and makes a point. Student was conscious of presentation and style when writing and editing this exam, which features an explicit and purposeful introduction, strong topic sentences and transitions, and a clear conclusion.

13.5     Exam submitted, identifies and addresses an issue head-on, demonstrates mastery of the subject, tells a clear narrative story, has an easily identifiable structure, and makes a strong point. Student was conscious of presentation and style when writing and editing this, and the presentation and style is such that the exam is easily readable. Exam features an explicit and purposeful introduction, strong topic sentences and transitions, and a clear conclusion.

15        Same qualities as 9, above, but this exam features a clever, provocative, or humorous title for each essay, reflects an uncommon elegance of written expression and style while also offering some original insight into the subject. Makes an undeniable point. Student has very clearly put a lot of thought and work into this exam before and while writing, editing, and revising it.
