Example

In chapter 1 of the Moors in Spain, Lane-Poole quotes the following lines from Walter Scott’s epic poem “The Vision of Don Roderick”:

Nor shall it ever ope, old records say,

Save to a king, the last of all his line,

What time his empire totters to decay,

And treason digs, beneath, her fatal mine,

And high above, impends avenging wrath Divine—

This is stanza XI of the poem, which imagines the story of Roderick (or Rodrigo) who was the last Visigoth King of Spain at the time of the Moorish conquest. Lane-Poole includes the literary references to Walter Scott’s poem to enhance his description of the defeat of the Visigoths. Walter Scott wrote the poem in 1811 on the occasion of the British War in the Iberian Peninsula.
