Read the Introduction by Julia Bray (NOT the foreword by Marina Warner!).

Read the first 13 biographies, from “Ḥammādah bint ʿĪsā” to “Faḍl al-Shāʿirah al-Yamāmiyyah.” This is pp. 3-73 in the print version.

For your response paper, focus on the primary text, Consorts of the Caliphs.

Then point to 3 or 4 passages from the text that are particularly complex or revealing in relation to these problematics (using the biography #) and give a sentence or so about each passage. You can distribute them in any way – all examples of one problematic, or one for each, or something in between.
