PHIL 3314 Spring 2019
Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, care ethics, and virtue ethics.
In-Class Writing Assignment 2
Monday, March 18, 2019
This assignment differs from the first by asking you to compare and evaluate two theories we have discussed. Unlike the first paper, you will have to give your own argument in favor of a chosen moral view, as well as demonstrate your knowledge of two views.
Prompt:
Compare and evaluate two of the major moral theories we have discussed so far. Choose from utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, care ethics, and virtue ethics. First, explain each view. Second, explain how they differ. Use one example to show how each view would handle a moral dilemma (the example of a moral dilemma can be one we have discussed in class, or an original example). Third, evaluate the views—which moral theory is better, and why?
Writing tips:
- Make sure to address all parts of the prompt. Check them off as you go, if this will help.
- Include a thesis! Given the specificity of this prompt, your main point should be that moral theory X is better than moral theory Y.
- In part three: do not merely state that one view is better. You must give an argument in favor of your view. For example, you can show that moral theory X gives a more intuitive result in a specific example, or that moral theory X addresses concerns that moral theory Y cannot.
- In order to address this prompt fully, your paper should be the equivalent of 2.5-3 pages typed.
- Cite your sources! Failure to cite a direct quote or paraphrase is plagiarism. You do not need to use any outside sources besides Rachels.
How to prepare:
- You do not need to do any writing in advance, though you are welcome to if that makes you feel more comfortable.
- If you are not satisfied with your paper by the end of class, you may finish it outside of class and email it to me within 24 hours.
- You should review the prompt and rubric before coming to class. This way you won’t spend much of the 75 minutes brainstorming and will have more time to write.
- Review the slides and/or the relevant readings before coming to class. Highlight passages you intend to quote or paraphrase.
- Bring the relevant readings to class on the day of the in-class writing.
