Assignment 1: Discussion Assignment

The discussion assignment provides a forum for discussing relevant topics for this week based on the course competencies covered.

For this assignment, make sure you post your initial response to the Discussion Area by Saturday, March 5, 2016.

To support your work, use your course and text readings and also use outside sources. As in all assignments, cite your sources in your work and provide references for the citations in APA format.

Start reviewing and responding to the postings of your classmates as early in the week as possible. Respond to at least two of your classmates. Participate in the discussion by asking a question, providing a statement of clarification, providing a point of view with a rationale, challenging an aspect of the discussion, or indicating a relationship between two or more lines of reasoning in the discussion. Complete your participation for this assignment by Wednesday, March 9, 2016.

Epidemiological Applications

Describe how the concept of multifactorial etiology relates to the natural history of disease and the different levels of prevention. How should the nurse incorporate these concepts into health promotion of clients in community settings? How should the nurse approach client risk in these health promotion activities?

Disease Outbreak

Select an infectious disease and research the CDC website for information about the disease, its natural history, presenting symptoms, and outbreak characteristics. Identify an occurrence of the disease by searching the Internet for recent reports of this disease, and compare that episode or occurrence with information from the CDC website. How closely did that outbreak resemble the case definition?

2. Social Structures and Change

Write approximately 2 pages of text and then have maps and graphics as separate pages as well as a reference list on a separate page. You should use 11 point font, one inch margins, one and half line spaced. Have page numbers. Neatness, good formatting as well as good writing and communication skills matter for this assignment. Also use the Turabian parenthetical style for your text citations and for your Reference List.

The text will include the following:

1. Based on the readings, give a half page describing generically as how social, ethnic, and racial structures relate to describing and understanding cities in general.
2. Take approximately one page for discussion of poverty/social class structure and shifts and Race/ethnicity/immigration structure and shift in Vienna, Austria (800 AD to the early 20th century period)
3. Conclude with half page on the link to the spatial outcomes of poverty, race, and ethnicity.
