Ina survey class such as this, we have relatively little time to explore any one artist in depth. This paper is your chance to gain a greater appreciation of one artist, selecting one who has been active (produced artwork) during the 202 time period (Northern Renaissance to the present day). This is a research paper, and a minimum of five sources are to be used; a works cited page must be appended to the paper. Sources must be high quality and include 3 or more published (non-internet) sources. Please follow appropriate citation guidelines; the standard is MLA. (For guidance, see resources here: https://byu.instructure.com$WIKI_REFERENCE$/pages/handouts-slash-links.) Your paper (~3 pages in length) should include these components. In parentheses, we have made suggestions (not hard-and-fast rules) for approximate length of each component: Introduction and thesis statement (10 pts): Grab our attention, introduce your artist, and make an argument (thesis statement) that will unify the paper (tying in the artist’s significance and most important works, for instance). (One paragraph) Brief artist biography (15 pts): Short and sweet, with key biographical details. (One paragraph) Significance of the Artist (20 pts): A discussion of the significance of the artist tied to the historical and cultural context. Why is the artist important? What is the artist responding to? What are the most important concerns or themes of the artist? (One half page) Most Important Works (10 pts): A brief discussion of the most important works of the artist. (One paragraph) Substantive Analysis (25 pts): A substantive analysis of one of the artists’ works. This part of the paper should use the formal and critical tools you have learned during the course (review Webinar 2 and the many tools suggested under Content and especially Form). (One page) Formatting & Sources (10 pts): 5 research sources with MLA formatting followed for in-text citations and works cited. Clarity of Prose (10 pts): Grammar, spelling, punctuation, paragraph and sentence structure. A formal academic tone should be used
