Concerts to use for paper

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony no. 9

Philadelphia Orchestra, Beethoven Symphonies no. 5 & 6 (Played to an empty hall due to COVID-19 outbreak)

The Philadelphia Orchestra – BeethovenNOW: Symphonies 5 & 6

Writing:

  • Compose your review of the concert and include information such as who performed, where the performance was held, and what music was performed. Also, use whatever knowledge you can from the course to describe the music. (If it is an ensemble larger than 5 musicians, please do not include the names of the performers, nor a count of each part, such as “There were 12 sopranos, 11 altos…”)
  • The report must also include comments on how the music made you feel, your reactions to the music, and other opinions about the performance. Try to ground these in musical terminology from the course: Why do you suppose the music made you feel the way you did?
  • Your report should be modeled on a professional review from a newspaper, or another periodical (such as the Daily Press, Virginian-Pilot, NY Times, or New Yorker). However, your report should be formatted like an academic paper according to MLA, APA, or Chicago Manual styles (See the rubric for additional formatting requirements)
  • If you attend a stage work, do NOT include a synopsis of the plot. Instead, write about the performance – especially the musical aspects.
  • Please do not provide a roster of the performers. Feel free to mention a small number by name. Also, please do not summarize the performers’ biographies.
  • You do not need to do any research; however, If you do, you MUST cite your sources according to MLA, APA or Chicago styles. Plagiarized papers (including paraphrases without citation) will receive a grade of zero.
  • Your writing must be original. You may not submit a report you used for any other class (no self-plagiarism). If you attend with someone else from the course, your reports must be COMPLETELY original – similar papers will be deemed plagiarism and will earn a zero

Format:

  • The review should be 3-5 pages, typed, double-spaced, using a 12-pt. Arial font, and 1” margins. Include the date you will submit the report. You are encouraged to include a title heading according to MLA, APA, or Chicago manuals, but the heading will not count as part of the 3-page minimum.
  • The paper must NOT have additional spaces between paragraphs (instructions) and new paragraphs may only be indented an additional 0.5” from the margin.
  • Staple program and ticket-stub to the report. (If this is a distance class include a copy of the program cover, and set-list and include it with your report as a scan or photo) (If your instructor offer extra credit for visiting the writing center, the slip from the center must be included when the paper is submitted).
  • The paper must be one of the following formats, and other formats will earn a grade of zero: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf
