This assignment must be successfully completed in order to be eligible for the Child Abuse Detection/Reporting and Project SAVE (violence prevention) certifications. It is also worth 10% of your final grade.

Directions

  • Answer the following questions based on your text and class lecture.
  • All responses must be typewritten, in complete sentences, double-spaced, and proof-read.
  • Spelling and grammar will be part of your grade.
  • Number and letter your responses.
  • Include your course section number at the top of the page.
  • A hard copy is due at the beginning of class on the due date.
  • See your syllabus regarding deductions for late papers.

Part A.

1.    Read through the Project SAVE booklet (located within the Materials for Assignment 3 folder in the Week 13 Folder). Assess the early warning signs for potentially violent behavior as listed in the booklet.  Choose three that you feel are the most critical and explain why you feel each is important.

2.    As noted in Chapter 15 of your text, negative and judgmental attitudes are often at the root of violence.  Review the table of contents of the “Speak Up Handbook” within the Materials for Assignment 3 folder.  a) Choose at least two articles to read within the document.   b) Briefly describe each article and explain how it could be a potential contributor to violence. c) Summarize the steps from Six Steps to Speaking Up  (on page 77 of the actual document or pg 40 of the PDF numbering). d) Discuss how easy or difficult you think it would be to speak up in a real situation.

3.   Using Chapter 15 of your text as a resource, explain what would be the best response for supporting a culture of non-violence in the following situations:

 a.     You are in a group of people and one person makes a joke about a different gender, race, religion, weight, socioeconomic status, or sexual orientation.

 b.     You witness a heated verbal argument.

 c.     You see a child hitting another child.

 d.     You see inappropriate posts on Facebook that involve generalizations or stereotyping.

Part B.

  1. According to the website www.dorightbykids.org, how can you tell if you have “reasonable suspicion”?
  2. Utilize information in the text, and the website, as well as information in the “Child Abuse Indicators” document within the “Materials for Assignment 3” folder to describe how you would respond to the following situations.  Identify any “indicators” or signs of abuse/maltreatment that match up with information from the “Child Abuse Indicators” document. Then determine whether or not there is reasonable suspicion to report and describe exactly how you would proceed.

       a.   A six year old is dressed in a dirty long sleeved shirt and pants on a hot summer day.

 b.   A five year old child has a round crusty scab on the inside of his arm. The child says he fell.

 c.   A four year old tells you that their step-mother made him touch her private parts.

 d.   A nine year old stole some small articles from the local drug store. Her mother spanked her, causing bruises and welts.

3. According to the website www.dorightbykids.org, in addition to reporting, what can be done to help prevent abuse against children in society today?

4 a. According to the Physical Punishment article, describe at least two reasons why non-physical approaches to discipline have been found to be better than physical approaches. b. Describe at least two alternative strategies for behavior modification that do not involve physical punishment (Check out the Physical Alternatives document).
