4.1 Major Course Assign: Completing a Unit

This is a substantial assignment shared with your peers for feedback.

So while this is labeled discussion, it really is more like you are making a presentation to your peers of the work you have done so far this term.  So think of this like a written class presentation.  In giving feedback to your peers, also consider like you would do in a face to face situation.  Give significant feedback, real advice, and expect that from your colleagues.

Taking the work you have done in previous modules, finish your unit.  Organize it in 5 lessons.  You can divide your lessons in a particular way that works for your work environment, or you can work with this suggestion (as given in the module introduction):

  • an introduction,
  • a discussion of your theoretical approach to curriculum and design
  • a pre-assessment to find what learners already know,
  • lessons with new concepts/skills to learn,
  • opportunities for learners to practice independently and in groups,
  • conclusion,
  • and a way to evaluate what learners gained in the end.

Give enough detail for each lesson so that it is clear what you are doing and what students are doing in various steps.  Each lesson should have at least one specific learning objective, an engaging introduction, relevant teaching, opportunity for students to practice or participate, and a meaningful closure.

Finally, be sure to cite sources for all ideas and practices that you copy or adapt for your use.  It is totally great to use ideas that you have found elsewhere.

Add an annotated bibliography (APA format) at the end for at least four sources that helped you with the content or teaching of the unit.  At least one source must be an article from a peer-reviewed academic journal.  Each annotation needs a brief one-paragraph summary of the source and a mention of how it is useful to your unit.  Also include one or two sources where you have looked at similar programs and say what you learned from examining them.  (THis could be a website, a visit to a similar institution or interviewing someone who does work similar to what you are doing.

Your feedback to peers will be done in the next discussion space in a more formal way using a rubric.  You will be assigned students to review formally, but please also give informal feedback in the first discussion space.

Use the feedback form for peer feedback.  This is peer review, and your review will not will not impact the grade for the designer of the program.  You will be graded for your review capabilities. In all of our work we do work in teams and this is to simulate this.  When we build programs we rarely do so in isolation, so please be honest with your peer, it will help his or her program.
