Concert Report Guidelines
To complete our class, you must complete two concert reports (one of them MUST be a live
IVCARTS event). You can attend two live concerts to write your reports on. OR you can attend the
IVCARTS event and an “Online Concert”. Doing one of each is what I would recommend, and I
would even recommend you complete an “Online Concert” first.
Which ever you decide to complete first, the plan is to have you complete your first by the week
of your
Midterms and the second by the Finals.
Your Two Options

“Online Concert” Live IVCARTS Event
At the end of this guide, I have provided
several pre-approved videos of a full length
concert. Each video is about 1hr-1h45m in
length (like a live concert).
Select one video to watch in full. PLEASE watch
the video uninterrupted. Treat it like a full
length movie, invite some friends, don’t skip
any scenes and try to keep track of your
favorite pieces.
I recommend that you listen a little bit of each
video and find one you like. There are videos of
many different styles and eras.
Remember to include the title in your
assignment submission so I know which video
you chose to watch.
YOU MUST EMAIL ME epark63@ivc.edu BEFORE
YOU ATTEND THE CONCERT and I will give you
an approval. You can head over to
http://www.ivcarts.org to find an event and
even purchase a ticket. Some events such as all
IVC student recitals are free. So come support
our IVC Music Majors.
YOU MUST ALSO ATTACH (or email me) PROOF
OF YOUR ATTENDANCE (keep your Ticket Stubs
and Concert Programs)
PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL AND QUIET. The
concerts are being recorded, please do not
disturb the recordings or your fellow audience
members.
I suggest you quietly take notes of your
favorite pieces!

Your Actual Report
Upload or email me proof of attendance – a picture of your ticket stub and/or program is good
enough.
Write a 2 page report (~750 words) giving a review of the concert you attended.
You must describe some of the music you heard for the full points
SOME THINGS YOU CAN TALK ABOUT:
What did you think of the Audience culture? When do people applaud?
How does it differ from other concert cultures you’ve experienced?
What pieces were performed? How would you characterize the sound of the ensemble?
What was the style of each of the pieces performed? The years they were composed?
Any specific comments about the performers?
Music is a temporal art, we always need to talk about specific moments and not use lazy
generalized answers.
Pick 2-4 specific pieces to analyze:
Timbre
Tempo
Volume
Rhythm
Melody
Harmony
Form
Historical Period/Musical Style
Did you enjoy the concert? Why or why not?
This list is not exhaustive, you could easily talk about other subjects that piqued your interest.
Try to silently take notes during the concert to talk about later
You will not be graded on your English, you must demonstrate Proof of effort for the full credits.
Please email me right away if you have questions or are unable to attend an IVCARTS concert.
