In Search of Hamat’sa by Aaron Glass (2004)

Prepare at home to be turned in the day of the test Tuesday, November 7, the following discussion based on the streaming video "In Search of Hamat’sa," by Aaron Glass (2004):

Discuss two related concepts presented in the film: First, "the relationship of collaboration and appropriation" between the 19th/early 20th-c. ethnographers (specifically Franz Boas and George Hunt) and members of the Kwakwak’wakw people. Second, presence of "historical irony and reversal" in the persistence of Hamat’sa in the 20th and 21st centuries. How is the Hamat’sa used today (and/or how has it become) as an emblem of cultural identity.

Be sure to reference the years the Hamat’sa and Potlatch were outlawed and reinstated. Also reference at least two contemporary descendants featured in the film when discussing the second section.

The fact that the video is loosely transcribed should be of help to you.

Be as concise as possible.
