GUIDELINES FOR SHORT PAPER #1
ALTERNATIVE FUELS FOR TRANSPORTATION
This documents presents to you the guidelines for the first paper of the semester. The
topic of the paper will be alternative fuels for transportation, focusing exclusively on
passenger vehicles for road transportation (that is, cars). Three alternatives will be studied
and discussed: biofuels, natural gas and electricity.
This is an individual assignment. Each one of you must research on the topic in order to
write an essay. Each one of you must choose one alternative fuel (for example: natural
gas, electricity, or one of the possible biofuels). The essay must cover the following points:
• What is the nature of the fuel you are investigating; how is it produced; where is it
produced; how much is produced; how is it stored.
• How does it work in the vehicle, and how is it different to the gasoline and diesel
engines.
• Who are the makers of the vehicles that use the fuel you are talking about. How
many vehicles are in the market, since when. What are the commercial future
prospects for the existing or new vehicles that use this this particular fuel. What
major challenges do they face?
• How do the vehicles refuel; what logistical challenges exist for this; what facilities
exist and where.
• Are there any controversies surrounding the fuel you are investigating; if so, which
are they, what positions are there around the controversies and who holds them.
The papers should be written in essay form (introduction, content development,
concluding remarks), and should contain all of the above points. The paper should have a
maximum of 2 pages, presented in Times New Roman 12, single space. All sources used
must be adequately referenced in the paper in the form (Gonzalez 2019), and then listed
at the end of the paper as References (this part is additional to the 2 pages of content).
Bring the assignment in paper for the class of February 21.
