Ibsen’s a Doll’s House

There are many offered at the colleges and around town.  You could go to a special philosophy lecture (outside of a philosophy class), attend a concert (any type of music is fine), or a play.  If you choose to write about a LIVE performance, you must send me an email to approve your selection.    The selections below encompass the three parts of humanities in this course including philosophy, drama, and music.   Basically, I want to encourage you to get out and enjoy the humanities!

Your review should be about 500 words (more if you need it).   This is not simply a comment of how you feel about the work.  It should be a comprehensive review like the examples below.  It is a subjective opinion, but an educated and informed one you have developed through using assessment tools learned in this course. Your review should include a couple of key points:

• Would you recommend this performance/lecture/event to others for viewing? Why or why not?
• Your review should not just summarize the plot or what happens in the event. Instead, it should describe the elements of the piece and how they work together to provide a unifying idea.  Analyze the parts and how they create a successful or not so successful event.
• Be sure to support your opinions with examples. For instance, if you think the acting is poor, pick out a scene where the actor failed to present the intended emotion.  Therefore, the review requires you to go beyond whether you disliked it or not.  Be specific with what you thought worked and what did not.

The parts of your review should include

• Introduction: Sets up the event. What is the title?  Where did you view the event?  Who is the playwright/composer/lecturer?
• Execution: How was the event executed? What is unique about the interpretation? What’s the style? How do the individual parts fit together to make a whole?
• Specifics: Is there anything unique about this production? Can you compare it to anything similar?
• Opinion: Is the production successful in its execution? Why or why not? Is there something out of place within the individual parts (lights, sound, set, costuming, vision, acting)? What stands out? Does the acting bring the play to life? Are the musicians of good quality? Does the vision suit the intention of the event?
• Recommendation: Is this play worth seeing? Why or why not?
