GUIDELINES FOR THE HATE CRIME PAPER
The “Hate Crime” analysis integrates all three units. The paper and must be between 7-10 pages in length, typed and double spaced and
must include a cover and reference page. You should have at least two outside resources other than the class text.
Unit One
- Description of the environment, the setting, the town, the people, what lead up to the event. What was the social climate of the city, state, and the United States in regard to race relations?
- Describe the state of race relations during this time (i.e., political, social, and economic). Use definitions from class with examples from the readings.
- Utilize information from the class lectures and readings, definitions, articles, and reading materials.
Unit Two
- Description of unit two environment, town setting, people and social climate. Describe what is going in this unit and include thethree killers.
- What are your feelings after reading unit two? Provide a description of the prison, race, andrelationships in the prison.
- What role does the media play or influences? Are there any new individual(s) introduced? Tell me about Joyce King. Tell about her experiences with racism and discrimination.
- Utilize some of the information from class, example, definitions, articles, videos, or reading materials.
Unit Three
- Description of what is happening in the town.
- Describe the court room drama for each trial of the three men. What was different and similar for each trial?
- What role does the media play or influences?
- Describe your impression of race relations after reading “Hate Crimes”.
- How will this impact your career? How will you use it to work with people of color?
- How do you think this will impact society?
- Utilize some of the information from class, example, definitions, articles, videos, or reading materials.
- Describe what race relations and events have occurred in Jasper Texas over the last 5 years. Provide at least 2 examples
