Homework 4

Task Title:

Continuous flow methods

Task 1:

Determine production rates with constraints.

  1. Product network of a given factory is shown in Figure 1. Note that weekly demand, unit selling price, raw material cost, and unit operation time on machines A, B, and C are all given in the figure. Weekly capacity of machines is 40 hours.
  2. Analyze this network and decide what weekly production plan (product mix) should be in order to maximize profit. What is the constraint in this system?
  3. The described system is modified in such way that machine B can work only 4 days per week (32 hours) due to necessary repair. What is the optimal production plan (product mix) in this case? What is the constraint?
  4. The marketing department in original system expanded new market which allowed the selling price for product M to be $120/unit. What is the optimal production plan for this case?

Task 2

Determine production rates with time constraints.

Product network is given in the figure. Part A requires two operations on different machines with time shown in the figure. Part B requires two different operations on different machines with times in the figure. There one unit of each machine (total of four machines) available. Both parts are assembled at a separate station into a product C (time given in the figure) which is delivered to customers. All different machines/stations work in parallel, ie. simultaneously on different parts.

How many products can be delivered to customers per hour of production, i.e what is production capacity of the factory? How many parts A and B should be produced?

Task 3

Calculate Lead times

Consider a product, for which you receive an order with quantity 25, with the following processing times:

Operation Time [min]
1 1
2 2
3 4
4 2
5 3
6 6

Calculate the product (job) cycle time to produce the complete order using serial, parallel, and combined transfer between subsequent operations.

Instructions:

Explain all your answers and computation. If you have to assume something, state it in writing. The use of Excel program to solve the problems is advised.

Deliverables

Homework report should be written that explains computation and decisions. Provide graphical presentation of your solutions (eg. Gantt chart in task 3 and constraint graph in Task 1) and explain your computation. If you use Excel, submit the file too. If you submit multiple files ZIP them into a single file. For identification purpose follow this file name convention: ise4170-hw4-<yourname>.zip,  ise4170-hw4-<yourname>.docx, ise4170-hw4-<yourname>.xlsx  and ise4170-hw3-<yourname>.vsdx. Note: include your personal identification inside the files.
