WEEK 1 FORUM
Human
resource management can be a stand-alone function, or it can be one of
the primary functions within the HRM department. How is training
conducted in your organization? Briefly discuss with your fellow
classmates and formulate ways that training and HRM can be improved upon
in your department or organization.

HR Headline: Facing the Workforce of the Future

The diversity of the U.S. population has changed significantly over the
past decade, and more shifts are expected over the next 20 years. Some
examples include: 1) construction firms are employing a large number of
Hispanic/Latinos and they must adapt their recruiting, training, and
safety practices to reflect this diversity in their workforce; 2)
Harley-Davidson increased the number of minority and women managers and
workers by 20% over the past decade which has resulted in more African
America, Latino, and women customers; 3) long-haul trucking companies
are focusing on recruiting and training women to counter an expected
shortage of 111,000 drivers by 2014.

Questions for Discussion: Post to the Forums by midnight Thursday and
respond to at least 2 members of the class by midnight, Sunday of the
week. Please provide a minimum of three references or sources (not from
Wikipedia or anonymous sources) to support your ideas, arguments, and
opinions; correspond with at least 2 members of the class to discuss
and weeks Forum subject.

1. What do you think are the major reasons that more organizations are recruiting a diverse workforce?
2. What are some ways that recruiting would be done differently to attract more African Americans? Latinos? Women?
3. What are some ways that training would be done differently for African Americans? Latinos? Women?

employers use integrity and personality tests but some of these have
been challenged in courts. One example is where the 7th U.S. Circuit
Court of Appeals concluded that Rent-a-Center’s use of the MMPI
personality test probably prevented mentally challenged individuals from
getting promotions in the company. Shortly after this ruling, Jeannine
Cruz sued the Louisiana State Police claiming that she was discriminated
against based on sex because her scores on several employment tests
(including the MMPI) were not high enough to warrant promotion to a
trooper position. In fact, her performance on the tests indicated that
she was a candidate for “sexual misconduct” and “chemical dependency/”
She claimed in her suit that the tests utilized are not fair to women
because men tend to score more positively than do women. Some experts
think that similar lawsuits can be expected based on the Rent-a-Center
case if companies do not relate the test content to specific job
content.

Questions for Discussion: Post to the
Forums by midnight Thursday and respond to at least 2 members of the

2 members of the class to discuss and weeks Forum subject.

1. Do you think employers should use integrity and personality tests to
make recruiting and promotion decisions? Why or why not?
2. Can you think of some jobs where integrity and personality tests
might be more appropriate than for other jobs? Give your rationale.
3. Do you think companies will use more or less integrity and personality tests in the next five years? Why?WEEK 4
Discuss
the pay and compensation you receive at your most recent place of
employment and what aspects of compensation are most important to you?

or web logs provide an easy way for people to post opinions on any
subject – including work-related issues or individuals. Some businesses
have established their own blogs, often written by the CEO. Some
companies have fired or disciplined employees for what they say on their
blogs. The best way to handle these concerns is to make clear what the
boundaries and expectations of personal blogging might be. An employee
blogging policy that spells out the boundaries and then a signed
non-disclosure privacy agreement is the best approach. Wikis, group
editable web pages, can be useful for creating agendas and revising
documents and schedules. However, Wikis, like blogs, can cause
difficulties in that some people may have inside knowledge not meant for
publication, or others may plagiarize sources unwittingly.

1. Do you think all companies should establish their own blogs? Why or why not?
2. Do you think employees should be fired for what they say on their blogs? Explain.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using Wikis?

1. What are the main health concerns that affect people at work?

2. What are some of the major ways we can reduce workplace stress?

Based on current data and research, what does the future look like for both?
