Order Description

Explore idea of a Raga vs a Scale. These musical ideas are similar but have significantly different cultural interpretations. From the readings and video links it is clear that a for Indian Classical musicians, a Raga is loaded with meaning–from the time of day to the season. It is also clear that certain scales are treated with a similar degree of cultural baggage by Irish folk musicians in the US and Ireland. How and more importantly why does something as simple as a collection of pitches (scale/raga) take on so much cultural baggage over time? And, can this teach as anything about the attribution of meaning in American Popular music?

Read two biographies that profile Americans who “made something of themselves.” For this paper, we want you to compare the lives of Samuel Zemurray (The Fish that Ate the Whale) and Madame C. J. Walker (On Her Own Ground) and write a 4-6 page paper addressing the following question:

How do the lives of Samuel Zemurray and Madame C. J. Walker, as depicted by their respective biographers, illuminate the tensions and possibilities of the American Dream?

Analyze them in relation to each other, while still showing a good knowledge of each individual work. Think about what these two lives, as represented by the authors, teach us about late 19th/20th century America.

Base line assessment is essential in the older adult. The older adult has many potential negative outcomes related to age related changes and management of disorders. Look at nutritional statutes and temperature. What is the baseline or normal level? Inventory the number of medications of an older adult family member or in the community. How many are they taking? Are they also taking over the counter treatments or vitamins? Is there a potential problem here? Write on paragraph for each.
