Drama, as a genre of literature, is unique in the way that it presents and develops its story, characters, and themes. Because there is not typically a narrator or narrative in drama, as there is in the novel or the short story, the audience must rely on the setting of the play and the characters’ dialogue, facial expressions, and actions to tell them the story. Readers must also consider these elements in order to develop their interpretations of the play’s themes and characters.
For this third paper, students should consider the text of the play, the time period in which it was written, historical and cultural elements, and outside information that could help to contribute to the focus and themes presented through the text of the play by analysis.
Think about specific questions that could help the outline/organizational process for this paper such as:
* Who are the main characters of this play? How do they contribute to the play as a whole? As an individual?
*How does the setting and environment contribute to the play? Would certain elements of the play change if the setting changed?
*What is the purpose of the play? Why did Glaspell or Shakespeare write this play?
*Who is the audience? Why?
* Is there symbolism in this play? Is there an underlying meaning to certain elements?
