Analysis of Science and the Modern World

Alfred North Whitehead in his lectures collected in Science and the Modern World (1925) discusses the historical origins of science. The paper is to analyze Whitehead’s views on science and apply those views to at least three of the movies listed in the Project Description. You may approach your application of Whitehead’s views to these films in any manner you believe is both appropriate and interesting, including in your discussion the supporting and contrasting views of other thinkers. The essay should specifically address the underlying assumptions of Whitehead’s views and how, as such, these views reflect upon and define what it means to be human.

Your paper is to analyze Whitehead’s views on science and apply those views to at least three of the movies that we’ve watched, discussed or will watch in class. You may approach your application of Whitehead’s views to these films in any manner you believe is both appropriate and interesting, including in your discussion the supporting and contrasting views of other thinkers. Your essay should specifically address the underlying assumptions of Whitehead’s views and how, as such, these views reflect upon and define what it means to be human.
By way of example only, in his introductory chapter 1 as to the origins of science, Whitehead concludes with the following observation:
“Faith in reason is the trust that the ultimate nature of things lie together in a harmony which excludes mere arbitrariness. It is the faith that at the base of things we shall not find mere arbitrary mystery…..To experience this faith…is to know that, while the harmony of logic lies upon the universe as an iron necessity, the aesthetic harmony stands before it as living ideal moulding the general flux in its broken progress towards finer, subtler issues.”
Do the movies that you’ve selected correspond to, or represent a contrasting view with, what Whitehead identifies as “faith in reason” and “arbitrary mystery”? Which, if any, of them express what Whitehead describes as “aesthetic harmony” and how? In speaking of “faith in reason” and “aesthetic harmony”, how does Whitehead implicitly define what it means to be “human”?
Alternatively, you might, for example, wish to consider Whitehead’s views on the “romantic reaction” as described in chapter 5, where Whitehead concludes:
“[T]he nature-poetry of the romantic revival was a protest on behalf of the organic view of nature, and also a protest against the exclusion of value from the essence of matter of fact…..The romantic reaction was a protest on behalf of value.”
What does it mean to protest on behalf of an organic view of nature or value? Do these films “protest” in their depiction of artificial intelligence?
Both style and substance are important. Your paper should clearly and succinctly articulate a thesis at the beginning, in particular, a summary of Whitehead’s view under discussion, and then develop that thesis in a manner that is well organized, insightful, and persuasive. Your paper must also be grounded in an analysis of three (or more) films, including their visuals, plots and dialog.
Moreover, your paper must include (1) text citations in the form of endnotes, (2) a bibliography of reliable sources, and (3) screenshots (with descriptive captions) as an appendix.
Your text citations may consist of either in-text citations or endnotes (but not footnotes). A bibliography alone does not suffice, since it does not indicate what sources provided which insights or ideas. Where appropriate, you should quote Whitehead, movie dialog and third party sources, though your quotes should normally be no more than two or three sentences with longer quotes placed in your endnotes.
Your appendix of screenshots should consist of images taken from the movies that illustrate points developed in your paper, not simply describe visually scenes from the movies. You should include at least nine screenshots; more are welcome. Moreover, each screenshot should be accompanied by a short caption that explains the reason for its inclusion. Your screenshots should act as a separate – but short – visual essay supporting the thesis of your paper.
Excluding endnotes, bibliography and screenshots, your paper must be at least 6 pages but no more than 8 pages in length, double-spaced, in 12-point font and with one-inch margins.

2:Critque Essay

Order Description

In this essay, students will be given a text on which to present a more formal evaluation than that which was given in the response essay. Students will evaluate the text in an argumentative fashion using various criteria as directed by the instructor.

Approach and Requirements
In chapter 6 of your textbook, A Brief to Writing from Readings, Stephen Wilhoit writes on page 95:
While response essays focus on your personal reactions to a reading, critiques offer a more formal evaluation. Instead of responding to a reading in light of your experience and feelings, in a critique you evaluate a source text’s quality or worth according to a set of established criteria.
Wilhoit then continues to explain more strategies in writing a critique on pages 96-97 by looking at film review as critique.
For this writing assignment, you will write a critique essay in response to the article “Teaching, Learning, And Millennial Students” by M. Wilson. This article is included in the “eReserves”
When writing your critique essay, you will want to incorporate the analysis of at least one other article in your essay. You should choose any of the articles in the “reserved readings” section of the classroom to include in your critique. You may want to select an article that we have already read as a class. Overall, you may select any articles in the “eReserves” you prefer.
You will cite all sources you refer to in the paper using APA citation style. You will list the sources at the end of the paper using APA style as well.
Your essay should have the following:
• an introduction with a thesis statement.
Wilhoit explains on page 109 that in the introduction you will introduce the topic of the article and provide the title and full name of the author. You also integrate “your thesis and a brief summary of the reading (one or two paragraphs long).” The overall introduction can be, as Wilhoit notes, two or three paragraphs long.

• at least three body paragraphs
As Wilhoit explains on pages 109-110, your body of your essay will “state the criteria of your judgments,” “offer examples,” and “explain your judgments.” This type of analysis will involve at least three paragraphs.

• a concluding paragraph
As Wilhoit instructs on page 110, in your concluding paragraph, you will “wrap up the paper” and “reassert your thesis.” A suggestion made by Wilhoit is that you “mirror” the strategy you used in your opening in your concluding paragraph.

3:Business Plan and Strategic Planning Project Paper

Written Business Plan and Strategic Planning Project Paper (Part A—25%) and PowerPoint Presentation (Part B—15%) (40% of overall grade)
This project will be completed in partnership with other students (Groups will be assigned by third week of course). Please be aware that the grade earned will be applied to all members of the team.

A business plan is an essential roadmap for business success. A business plan is a formal statement of a set of business goals, the reasons they are believed attainable, and the plan for reaching those goals. It may also contain background information about the organization or team attempting to reach those goals. When the business is to assume a major change or when planning a new venture, a 3 to 5 year business plan is required.

The Purpose of this Assignment is
• To integrate principles learned this semester and apply them to a reality-based proposal for decision-making:
o Sample Topics: Development of new service/program such as Wound Care Center, Lymphedema Program; addition of nursing unit to hospital; proposal to outsource an entire segment of the workforce such as nutritional services, pharmacy, etc.; proposal to modify/change staffing or care delivery model; proposal to obtain Magnet designation, etc.
• This assignment is both a paper and a power point presentation. Both the paper and the power point presentation should develop the strategy from inception and provide persuasive argument regarding the value of the project.

How to Complete this Assignment
You and the members of your team will chose a service that will add revenue for the facility you chose to write about. This facility can be real or imaginary. Examples of past business plans written for this course include adding robotic surgery , opening a cardiac rehab service, employee fitness and adding staff to the nursing units. You will write a business plan with a convincing argument to accept the plan and open the service.
The paper and presentation should contain the following elements:
• Overview of the problem or need definition. Include a description of your facility including mission statement and/or vision statement so you articulate the goals of your facility. This can be a real hospital or you can make up an imaginary acute, long term or outpatient facility. Include the corporate culture, goals, objectives and how this project will align with these goals.
• Analysis of your company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis) which will show that the plan is realistic and has considered opportunities and challenges.
• Description of your product or service including alternatives to project if the project is not approved.
• Description of how your product or service is different than any competitors in the area.
• Market analysis: discuss the market you’re trying to enter, competitors, where you fit, and what type of market share you believe you can secure.
• Marketing plan: How you plan to market the product or service.
• Outcomes measurement—-If your plan is accepted and implemented, how would you know if it is successful? What data would you collect? How would you quantitatively analyze the data (such as NPV, payback period analysis, IRR, profitability index or break even) and qualitative analysis?
• Financial Analysis–Develop a cash flow statement, including revenue projections versus costs, so you understand what your needs are now and will be in the future (a cash flow statement also can help you consider how cash flow could impact growth. Consider impact of insurance plans, healthcare reform, private pay, and non-insured clients on financial outcomes of facility.
• Timeline for project implementation using GANTT chart, critical path or PERT chart.
• Summary/conclusion that wraps everything together including the feasibility.
Part A: Paper
o Length: 8-10 pages, written in APA 6th edition format, excluding the cover page and the references
o Include at least three references that are different from the references provided in the course for your reading.
o Scholarly writing is expected
o Use the “Draft TurnItin” Dropbox to check originality report—be sure and look at each citation that is highlighted and compare it to the original source. You may find that you need to use quotation marks, if a direct quote, or paraphrase the content.
o Final version of your paper must be submitted to the Paper Dropbox that is designated for Faculty Grading
