Ben Hamper’s Rivethead

1:Ben Hamper’s Rivethead, either alone or in conversation with Michael Moore’s Roger and Me.

1. Individuality/Corporate Culture. Discuss the disconnect between large institutional structures (corporations, unions, government) and the needs of the individual worker. How does Hamper assert his individuality? Is freedom possible within these structures, for either author? Is such depersonalization a necessary evil, according to Hamper (and Moore)? How come others survive this process and he cannot?

2. Masculinity: Away from the factory, the men with whom Hamper works drink, fight, hunt, sleep around, listen to aggressive forms of music, and drive loud and powerful cars and trucks. Are these hypermasculine expressions a reaction to the depersonalizing nature of factory work? Are these behaviors signs of resistance? Or just necessary releases that keep them good workers? Discuss how working class identity is constructed both by Hamper (and Moore) himself and how he resents its misrepresentation in the mainstream media. Is the blue-collar identity marketed to the masses, according to both authors, actually a means of preventing social mobility, creating a compliant work force?

3. Responsibility: In Roger and Me, one of the spokesmen to GM says (to paraphrase), “GM is not responsible for the Flint’s destruction; GM’s function is to make cars and profits.” The men running GM in the 80s were clearly incompetent, but does that make their refusal to keep the plants open immoral, as they are portrayed by Hamper and/or Moore? If so, are Hamper (and/ or Moore) right? Or are their arguments based on flimsy ideas of entitlement? How do Hamper (and maybe Moore) address the issue of accountability on the personal, corporate, and civic level
