Post has two assignments

1:comparison of Flannery O’Connor’s: Everything that rises must converge and Hell’s Angels by Hunter Thompson

Write a closely persuasive paper in which you argue and persuade your reader to look at a writer and a selection of his or her sections/chapters we have read in a more powerful and careful way. In order to do this you will need to make a specific claim about how characters or movement of characters, setting, plot, or dialogue affect and/or help control theme or meaning. You must use two of the books we have read prominently in discussing your interpretation as well as three to four critical sources/interviews either from the classroom sources or library research with a similar or comparative thought process. My suggestions for organization and focused content include:

Anecdote/Introduction/Thesis- what will best introduce your ideas/ create interest from reader? Please formulate a claim or statement of interpretation focused on a character or theme? Understand the intended audience(s) and purpose(s). Consider the works historical, social, and political contexts in some brief detail in opening paragraph. Your argument/claim should be reasonable and supported by the text and a scholarly source. Your thesis or claim should include the following: “subject” + “position” + “characteristics/supporting discussion points”. Although each essay is distinct in terms of the argument presented therein, each essay is also comprised of a specific argument and careful support for this argument.

Section of Summarizing/Comparing- what is exactly happening in this book? With a particular character? Recount author and title as well as particular key events/movement of a particular character or play for unfamiliar reader. How strong is this theme and text? Also how strong is theme in relation to a similar book? Related characters? Identify intended claims/themes, both stated and implied through the actions/interactions of characters. Carefully consider how an author creates overall theme/appeal through the text. What exact scholarly work will you be using? Compare and contrast your interpretation to a scholar’s overall interpretation—this should involve not only a detailed summary of the text but also a detailed summary of the critical text. Support thoughts with textual evidence in the form of concise quotations?

Section of Classifying/Analyzing/Persuading – where does this book’s theme or main characters stand in your thinking? Identify the premises behind the theme/interpretation, and determine how those assumptions would be received by the intended reader(s)/audience(s). What exactly from the scholarly text do you agree or disagree with? What idea or claim from the scholarly source do you feel best supports your ideas? Support thoughts with textual evidence in the form of quotations?
