Post is of two assignments
1: Corporate Strategy: Vertical Integration and Diversification – Arauco Case
Order Description
*The memo should answer the Discussion Assignment question. In addition, they should apply concepts from the Reading “From Competitive Advantage to Corporate Strategy” by Michael Porter (HBR 1987) . PLEASE NO DEFINITION. INTEGRATE CONCEPTS, DO NOT LIST THEM OR USE CONJECTURES. MORE PERSONAL IDEAS AND OPINIONS. Your answer should be logical and supported by facts from the case or facts you research on your own. Do not present a summary of the case, but instead offer a well-supported evaluation using case information and incorporating concepts from the readings. Remember to cite any work that is not your own. *Case reading: Arauco (A): Forward Integration or Horizontal Expansion, HBS 9-705-474
*Discussion assignment: If Celulosa Arauco goes into paper manufacturing will it be able to share resources or transfer skills (be specific)? Will it have a competitive advantage in paper manufacturing?
*Please focus on these points to write the memo: 1. Main competitive advantage is soil condition, which created low cost in woods –> does not help pulp; 2. Economics of scope is related to their competitive advantages, but pulp has nothing to do with it; 3. Five Forces: Supplies -> low; Rivalry -> high; Substitute -> medium; Barrier to Entry -> medium low; Buyers -> high; thus, paper is an unattractive industry; 4. Better off: no cost advantage b/c limited sharing activities (transportation. labor, electricity). 5. Cost of Entry: high b/c specialized machine.
