In The Rhetoric of the Image, Roland Barthes semiotically analysed a Panzani pasta advertisement to reveal how ideology is transmitted through imagery. Is Barthes’ approach as effective today? Conduct your own semiotic analysis of a contemporary advertisement to explain why or why not.

Your analysis

(1) explore how the image/text functions to produce its meanings;

(2) demonstrate your engagement with ideas related to semiotic and post -semiotic theory

(3) be informed by reference material appropriate to that area.

– The critical terms from Week 3 and from the first year courses in Visual Culture and the Avant-Gardes will be especially useful. You MUST use some specialist terms – myth, connotation, signifier, for example – to anchor your analysis to appropriate scholarly sources.

– Pay attention to what the advertisement hides in the construction of its fantasy.

– Be sure to define your terms in the process of applying them. Consider the context of the advertisement and the impact of factors such as gender, sexuality, class, race and age on the overall effect of the message.
