Assignment instructions
In this assignment you will be acting in the capacity of a crime analyst in the London Borough of Southwark. Your manager has approached you for an analysis of bicycle theft in the borough, due to a perceived increase in offences. A working hypothesis from your colleagues is that the bike thefts are concentrated in time and space, and that understanding the patterns would enable them to design effective crime prevention strategies. Your task is to produce a report, no longer than 1,250 words, which will contain figures, maps from arcmap and a narrative that answer the questions below.
For this assignment you will be using data provided by the local council. This contains the locations of every recorded offence of bicycle theft in London in the 12 months ending on 30 November 2014. They have included data for all London boroughs just in case there are any crime hotspots that extend over the Southwark borough boundary into surrounding boroughs, but your analysis should focus on Southwark. In particular, your analysis should – at a minimum – answer the following questions:
1)Is bicycle theft spatially clustered and is this statistically significant? (HINT: what tests for spatial randomness have you been exposed to?).
2)Where are the hotspots of bicycle theft in the Borough?
3)How does the frequency of bicycle theft vary over time? What might explain any temporal patterns?
4)Where is the risk of bicycle theft the greatest? You should pay particular attention to choosing an appropriate denominator in order to answer this question, and you should justify your choice.
5)What are the limitations of your analysis? This will help decision-makers to understand how to use the information that you are providing.
You have been provided with the crime data, along with a selection of boundaries for spatial units in and around Southwark. Depending on the decisions you make, you may or may not need all of these boundary datasets in order to complete this assignment. You may wish to use these datasets as they have been provided or you may wish to isolate the boundaries for spatial units in Southwark. You will need to download additional map data and data for use as a denominator with which to answer question 4.
Your assignment should be written up in a clear, logical manner. It is advisable to have sections for the introduction, methodology and results, and a brief discussion of what the findings mean. Questions 2 and 4 require you to generate maps. Other questions require you to analyse the data in other ways. All methods you use should be succinctly explained, including any parameter choices, and an interpretation of the results should accompany all analysis presented. Extra marks will be awarded to students who draw upon appropriate geographical principles throughout their narrative.
It is important that you ensure that your work is presented in a clear format, and that your maps are properly labelled with legends, scales, north arrows and titles. How well you present your maps will contribute towards your mark, so do take heed of the cartographic advice you have been exposed to. Remember that you can export maps from ArcGIS as jpeg files which can be inserted into a Word document.
Make sure that your report is suitable for practitioners who may not be experts in crime mapping or criminology, but who need to have the geographical patterns clearly described to them so that they can take action to reduce crime. The word limit for this assignment is deliberately modest, which should force you to be concise in your writing. In the workplace it is often important to be able to get your point across clearly and quickly, so you should be attentive to superfluous words and descriptions. Aim for clarity above all. You may use bullet points (sparingly) if this helps you to convey your point(s).
