Format and Referencing Instructions
A. Requirement for Paper
1. Font: Times New Roman, 11 pt.
2. Line Spacing (under Format, Paragraph): 1.5 lines
3. Margins: 1” all around
4. Length: 3-5 pages (not including “References Cited”)
B. References
1. You must use the “number method” of citing references explained below.
• In this method – which is not the method you were taught in EXP! – the first time you want to cite a reference used, that reference is “(1)” and the next time that same reference is used again it is still “(1)”.
• References are simply numbered in their order of appearance.
• At the end of your paper a list of “References Cited” is given with the complete citation for each reference used appearing only once!
• Automatic “F’s” given to anyone not reading this and using footnotes.
• No footnotes (unless you have a traditional notation to make to clarify something in the paper).
• “References Cited” is not a bibliography! I do not need to see all the references you read but did not use in your paper.
2. You must use some scientific journals as your references. Using some websites is fine, but they cannot be your only source of information. If you need help finding a journal article about your topic, please ask me for help. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA!
C. Content & Requirements for Their Formatting
1. The possible paper topics are quite diverse, containing subjects that may or may not have genes “for” them.
2. The genetics of these latter types of subjects should therefore include research into susceptibilities based on genotypes and other more “subtle” genetic influences.
3. ALL papers should contain or make use of recent information.
4. Whether or not your particular topic could even make sense as something that could be “genetically screened for,” please make sure that you go into the situation in some depth versus stating “not genetic at all and therefore it would be a waste of time – end of story. “All conditions that may be chosen for your paper have some genes known to be, or suspected to be, associated with them. You must have a discussion about a few of these genes. Any paper that does not will be severely penalized.
5. ALL papers should include an overview or your disease/condition. You should include information such as symptoms/features and treatment as well as stats on prevalence and incidence and if relevant, the different populations or sub-populations for these stats.
6. ALL stats must be accompanied in paper by “references” (i.e., numbers representing cited sources).
7. ALL papers must have an introductory and concluding paragraph: You are trying to supply information to answer the question, “Should your company initiate a genetic screening test for your chosen disease/condition?”
8. ALL Tables or Figures should appear in an Appendix at the end of your paper (and not be considered as part of the 3-5 pp Memo).
