3: Comparing Saudi Nationalism to Iranian Nationalism

Order Description

Introducing the concept of nationalism; what it is and how a state uses nationalism as a mechanism for gaining the peoples loyalty in order for them to cooperate and serve their self-interest. I will also state how nationalism is developed which would lead me to the main point in my essay which is how nationalism is created and developed in Saudi Arabia and Iran through comparing and contrasting. I will then talk about how both states use religion in gathering people’s loyalty by creating this identity that all citizens can relate to and strive for, in order for the state to achieve its self-interests though that. This sense of national pride would cause the people to go the distance for their countries. However, the main purpose of my paper is to talk about how two Muslim countries that look quite similar on paper be so different when it comes to nationalism. Even though both countries are Muslim they represent completely different sects of Islam. Where the Sunni identity is pegged against the Shia identity. It is worth also mentioning that these two countries are enemies of one another and how this relationship also effects the nationalistic pride of both the citizens of Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Structure:
• Introduction paragraph. (where I introduce the concept of nationalism and state my thesis.)
• A Paragraph describing the Saudi Case
• A Paragraph describing the Iranian Case
• Comparing both states, differences and similarities.
• Conclusion

FINAL REMARKS:
Don’t spend too much space on defining nationalism in the introduction. The important part of the paper will be the description and contrast between Saudi Arabia and Iran.

You need to bring out that Iran is of course a much older country and civilisation than saudi Arabia, but that in both cases their specific forms of Islam became the religions of state more recently, Shiism under the Safavids in the 16th Century, Wahabism under the house of Saud in the 18th century. Iran was also united in roughly its present borders 500 years ago, KSA less than 100 years ago.

The House of Saud was much more tightly intertwined with Wahabism than the Qajar or Pahlavi dynasties were with Shiism, and the House of Saud has never tried forced modernisation and westernisation as Reza DShah and his won did from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Largely for that reason, the House of Saud has never faced a religious opposition nearly as strong as that mounted by the Shia clergy and masses against the Shah in the 1970s, which brought down the monarchy.

Today, you need to compare the theocratic element of both KSA and IRan, but point out that Iran contains far more democratic, modernist and egalitarian elements than KSA (including far more extensive women’s rights) and analyse why this is so. Is one reason that Iranian nationalism is much stronger? There is only one Shia Iran, but there are numerous Sunni Arab states, and it is not clear on what 9apart from oil an the guardianship of the Holy Places) the assumed primacy of KSA actually rests.
